Bill James, Co-Founder
Bill James is an artist, writer and interactive storyteller. He is a co-founder of The James Gang, which he established in 1989 with his partner Franke James. Bill is also the inventor of Verbotomy the daily create-a-word game and comic, which is currently being published in “b”, Baltimore’s free daily newspaper.
At The James Gang, Bill’s focus has been on interactive game design and cross-platform community building tools which he has produced for both commercial and editorial clients. In October 2006 he was awarded a Fellowship for Cross Platform Mentorship Lab at the Banff Center in Banff Alberta for Verbotomy, the create-a-word game. In 2003, Bill won credit for the Digital Gold Marketing Award and Best in Show for his writing work on Nike Canada’s RunTO campaign. In 2000, he helped secure funding from Telefilm for their new media project, Office-Politics, which was sponsored by Monster.ca and Stella Artois when it was launched. Bill has also received design awards for the interactive games created for Umbra and iVillage.
The James Gang client list includes Tribune Company (“b”), Optimum Associates, Resolute Funds Limited, Whiteside Energy, Innova Medical, Ontario Government, Upper Canada College, Kids4Peace and Ellen Roseman. Past clients include Umbra, Roots, Sony Music, Queen’s University, Arxx Building Products, Vizible Corporation, George Brown College, iVillage, Monster.ca, Stella Artois, MICA Management and Edward de Bono.
Bill’s artistic work includes a series of interactive, computer-driven, multimedia installations which have been exhibited in art galleries across Canada. His 1986 installation for Guerrilla Tactics included real-time video integration with user input, consumer profiling, and electronic commerce, foreshadowing the internet’s biggest trends by almost a decade. His musical comedy, Control Alt Delete, premiered at Toronto’s Poor Alex Theatre in 1999.
Bill has presented on creativity, word-of-mouth marketing, and community-building at many conferences including ICE (Interactive Content Exchange), GIGSE (Global Interactive Gaming Summit & Expo), Language Creation Conference (UC Berkeley), I-Gaming Indepth, Sheridan College, CUTC, NMBA (Interactive Ontario), and the World Animation Celebration in Hollywood.
